Summary

Set at the beginning of Black Powder War (Book 3 in the Temeraire Series).
The Allegiance is a burnt wreck in the harbour of Macao, so Laurence finds himself in need of a different route to Istanbul, and of a skillful guide. The vagabond who delivered Lenton's orders, one Tenzing Tharkay, denies his request, citing prior obligations. He is, however, willing to hitch Laurence up to his own companions from his last journey back from Istanbul: experienced travelers in their own right, but carrying a very obvious secret that might just change Britain's fate in the Napoleonic wars. Suddenly, Laurence and Granby find themselves fighting on two fronts: one is their need to retrieve the Turkish dragon eggs that Britain so desperately needs, the other is swaying the loyalty of their mysterious guides back towards British shores. If only their guides were not so entirely unforthcoming and reserved … and why has Laurence been so dejected ever since he has left Macao (Tharkay) behind?
