Here’s the thing: Ginny had always been a little lonely.
As a girl, she had dashed, barefoot and alone, through the fields behind the Burrow. She learned the breaststroke with the carp and flew on her training broom with the sparrows. She braided wildflowers into crowns that would never serve any purpose, and had begged Ron and the Twins to let her in on their games.
Even before Ron left for Hogwarts, Ginny was sure she’d never fit in anywhere. After all, she couldn’t carve a place for herself in her own home. Why would Hogwarts be any different?
So, when she flipped open her new diary and began sketching calla lilies in swirls of ink, when the ink sank into the page and reformed into words—when the diary said: ‘Hello. That’s a beautiful drawing. My name is Tom. What’s yours?’
Well, Ginny had always been a little lonely.
‘Hello. My name is Ginny.’
