    Summary

He should’ve done something when he saw the water below him begin to move. When he saw the water begin to ripple, the pattern of its typical current breaking until something came out. Something, someone, Finney couldn’t see. But he didn’t need to see him to know him.

Finney had let him get away that night, crawl his freezing dead form away into the dark and snowy woods. He should’ve stopped him, should’ve kicked him back under the water or screamed for help. But he hadn’t and he had to live with that.

Ever since returning home from Camp Alpine Lake, Finney has been unable to shed burning ice that seems to have trapped itself beneath his skin. One night, when he's home alone, a certain ghost comes to offer some relief.

Michael knew what he was doing wasn’t right, still, he couldn’t care less. He was young and had done so many bad things already, this would be just another thing written in the book God would read out loud when the Judgment Day came.

Except God didn’t exist and he couldn’t go to Hell. But the Devil was real, and the Devil was naked, rinsing his greying hair under the shower.

They were still at the pizzeria, it was almost closing, but anyone could enter and catch them. There was a corpse by their side – sure, it was stuffed into an animatronic, but it still was a body, – and his own hands were still bloody and his brain decided to just shut off as he saw what was happening before him.

    Summary

The eggs tasted even better than they looked—fluffy and buttery with just the right amount of salt. Objectively, they were much better than any of the meals he had over the past five years. So why did eating them fill him with revulsion?

    “Finney, what’s wrong?”

A tear trickled down his cheek, followed by several more.

    “I—”

He swallowed. His shoulders trembled, and he sniffled. Unable to endure the alarmed concern in his father and sister’s eyes, he focused on the plate in front of him.

    “I shouldn’t be here.”

And then that ugly, beautiful truth ripped through his skin like a shirt several sizes too small:

“I should be with Al. I want to be with Al.”

After five years of captivity, Finney Blake is finally reunited with his family. He agrees to testify against his kidnapper, but the wounds on his heart run much deeper than the ones on his body, and doing so might not be easy. But just because something isn’t easy doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.
