“Oh, look how cute you are, Maksim,” Ilya said through pursed lips as he applied sunscreen to the toddler’s face with much resistance.
Shane watched as his husband prepared their son for his first swim lesson. Maksim looked precious in his swim shirt and shorts, both patterned with bright yellow triangles on an orange background. His sandy blonde curls, the same as his Papa’s, were combed back, and he flailed his chubby arms as Ilya continued to rub sunscreen on his freckled face. Ilya was unbothered, dodging tiny hands as he finished up.
Shane’s heart was going to burst from how cute the scene was, a feeling he’d experienced almost every day since Maksim was born two years ago.

Ilya awakes to the sound of his daughter’s whimpers. She’s not fully crying yet, but he can tell she’s getting there, probably ready for her next feed.
He feels movement next to him in bed, and Shane is trying to sit up when Ilya turns to look at him. “I’ll handle it, moya lyubov,” he whispers, one hand coaxing Shane back down.
He gave birth just two days ago, and the thirty hours of labor it took for Mila to finally make her grand entrance have left him sore and exhausted. Ilya has been doing his best to handle as many feedings and diaper changes as he can so Shane can rest and recover.
“M’kay,” Shane mumbles, not putting up much of a fight before resting his head on his pillow again, which is a testament to how worn down he must really be.

Summary
Shane impulsively makes a bet with Rose: if he can date a guy for a month longer than his customary one date followed by ghosting them forever, he gets $200; if he can’t, he agrees to let her set him up until he finally finds love. But he has no intention of playing it straight, so the plan—as he conspiratorially tells his best friend Ilya—is to fake date someone and split the money.
Ilya thinks this is a terrific idea and fully expects Shane to ask him to be his fake boyfriend… except he doesn’t. And Ilya can’t figure out why. Why didn’t Shane choose him, when they both know how effortless it would be to pretend with how close they already are, not to mention how all their friends would instantly believe it? And why does witnessing Shane even just pretend to date someone else feel like actual torture?
