After being temporarily sent to Nibelheim by his mother to escape equally dangerous Midgarian politics, Rufus narrowly escapes an assassination attempt with the help of a local boy.
Years later, both of these encounters shift the course of their lives.

Already in a shit mood, Cloud Strife receives a call that sours it even further.
Something isn't right in the Northern Continent, and he's the only one up to task to find out what it is. Thing is, he's already busy trying to solve his own mystery- Where is Vincent Valentine? Will finding one help him find the other? Cloud takes the mission, sucking up his dislike for the cold and setting foot in the last place he ever wanted to visit again.
It sucks being the Planet's Hero.

Vincent is dead.
At least according to his employee file. If he's going to get his belongings back from what's left of Shinra, he needs a next of kin to come and get them. But the only way to get a next of kin is to marry one. Thankfully, Cloud is always willing to help out a friend and he's not so great at reading things before he signs them. As long as everything goes smoothly, he won't even know that he agreed to marry Vincent before Vincent collects his things and tears up the agreement.
