    Summary

“I know what I am,” he said, as though he had rehearsed it a thousand times in private and never dared say it aloud, “I know what it means in court. I know what it means for succession. I know what it means for people like us to want things we are not supposed to want.”

Sokka’s hands clenched as Zuko smiled. “But if there is even a chance that I haven’t been alone in this. I would leave everything. I would go with you. Sokka, I- I choose you.”

The silence behind the curtain did not last. A hand grabbed the fabric from the other side and yanked it aside so hard the rods groaned. Light spilled between the two rooms.

And with it, so did the faces. Too many faces. Zuko’s breath stopped completely. For a fraction of a second, no one moved. Then Chief Arnook stepped forward. His face was red, not with embarrassment, but with fury that had nowhere to go.

Sokka and Zuko are best friends, despite political duty slowly pulling them apart. When a marriage is arranged between Prince Zuko and Princess Yue to secure an alliance, Sokka believes he has been betrayed and plans a genius plan to stop the marriage, but the plan spirals far beyond his control.

    Summary

Zuko's wounds after his father burns him become infected, and he wakes up from his fever a different person in a different place.
Jetko, Zuko joins the Freedom Fighters right after being exiled.

This series is not presented in chronological order.

Expect some deep, dark angst, some hope in the worst of times, and a lot of Jet and Zuko being each other's most dysfunctional coping mechanism.

As of right now, I am expecting there to be 20 parts. The pace of posting will be variable.

    Summary

“What do you remember?” Sokka asks, even though he knows he shouldn’t. Even though he knows better.

But he also knew better than to save a dragon from certain death.

The dragon is silent for so long that Sokka thinks it won’t answer him. He watches the rise and fall of its chest just to ensure it isn’t dead.

"Burning," it answers eventually. "I remember burning."

Or: Sokka finds a wounded dragon outside of his village a month before his sister discovers the Avatar trapped in the ice.

    Summary

[In another life, Zuko finds a poster for a missing bison outside Pao’s teashop, dresses himself in black, and resumes his mission with the kind of single-minded focus he hadn’t been able to muster for months.

In this life, Zuko finds a poster for a missing bison, stares at it for a bit with his insides roiling around his heart like a ship caught in a storm, and crumples it up in one hand before tossing it into the trash and going back inside.]

Sometime during late spring in the city of Ba Sing Se, Zuko serves tea (badly), falls in love (maybe), and deals with a chronic illness of the soul.

    Summary

Zuko said nothing for a moment, turning the name over in his mind. Sokka. It was so insufferably Water Tribe that the name must have been created to irritate him personally. He loathed it immediately and completely, “You have a sharp tongue for someone who is at the mercy of the Fire Nation,” Zuko answered instead, "I advise you to be careful with it, since sharp things tend to get taken away.”

The corner of Sokka’s mouth lifted into a smirk, his eyes finding Zuko’s, “You could certainly try.”

With the Avatar vanished, the Fire Nation successfully eradicated the Air Nomads and Northern Water Tribe before heading south. The Southern Water Tribe's poor defenses allowed the Fire Nation to defeat them easily, and with the last benders either killed or captured, destroyed the Water Nation completely.
Now, nearly a hundred years after the Avatar vanished, waterbenders, like airbenders, have become a myth.

Until a banished prince, with his honor in shambles and tasked to find and capture the long-vanished Avatar, discovers the myth to be untrue.
