    *ON PERMANENT HIATUS*

“I guess I’m just going to have to flirt with the hot paramedic from now on. He’s a buzzkill, but he’s easy on the eyes, right?”

Derek looks up and raises his eyebrows at the cop who gives him a knowing smirk. It’s then that he finally registers the name tag on his uniformed chest, right above his heart. It says S. Stilinski.

“Officer Stilinski,” Derek starts, fighting to keep his face serious. “That is workplace sexual harassment.”

“What’d I tell you?” He shakes his head softly back and forth, like he’s proud that Derek said anything not related to blood pressure and wounds. “Total buzzkill.”

As far as a community of sentinels is concerned, Jim's had long enough to bond with Blair, and he hasn't. Time for them to have a chance.

My look at how the Sentinel/Guide bonding trope might work in a canon scenario.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This Sentinel AU, inspired by Dolimir's "Moonhunt," has already generated lots of buzz, and readers eagerly await more chapters. Written by Stella, it's darker than its predecessor and sizzles with sexual tension.

It's a bit too early in the fic's development to say much more. However, she has so far walked a delicate tightrope with the Jim Ellison in this AU - hard, commanding, sophisticated with just a glint of warmth, thawing like ice in early spring. And there's just so much to love in the first six chapters - great POV (entirely the eyes of Blair, except for one short and powerful scene), vivid world building - heck, she even makes a parking lot at night seem ominous.

It's been a few weeks since the last update. Crossing fingers that Stella has the time and energy to continue.

EDIT (June 14, 2011) After a brief hiatus, Stella is back. By popular demand. With two more chapters. World building is one of Stella's specialties it seems. She has quite the imagination. Plus, there's an easy, lyrical rhythm in her writing that's a pleasure to read.

EDIT (October 7, 2011) Although still a WIP, Stella has advanced the story to chapter 14. It's the culmination of a meticulously crafted Sentinel/Guide bonding sequence that started in chapter 6 or so, but was anticipated from the first opening scenes.

Chapter 14 might be one of the most sizzlingly erotic pieces of fanfic you've ever laid eyes on. Say what you will - and there's a ton of mature audience fanfic out there - but it still takes courage to write a chapter that erotic and evocative.

Her use of language is so rich and poetic and flowing, her voice so unique, the universe so coherent and vivid, that you'll find yourself buying in. And the story is stacked, growing like a fractal. She has a very clear and complete sense of who Jim Ellison is, in the context of the universe she's created. It's too early in the story (what's really impressive is: chapter 14 is still within the first 24 to 48 hours of the timeline) to tell exactly where Blair's strength of character lies. He's the fish out of water who is busy adapting to an entirely new set of circumstances. But I trust that Stella will get there eventually.

I'm going to go out on a limb at this point to say that Moonrise is one of the best Sentinel AU's ever written, if just for the gorgeous use of language alone.

EDIT (November 25, and Nov. 30, 2012) Stella has added ten more chapters to date. Sometimes a WIP starts out well, but peters out, never fulfilling its initial promise. Not this one, Amazingly, Moonrise just gets better and better and better. The tapestry of the story is finally starting to emerge from threads introduced in the first few chapters. Don't be deterred by the tags. Stella is an awesome writer. You won't be able to tear yourself away.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I have a particular weakness for Sentinel AU's, especially ones in which the writer liberates Jim/Blair from the confines of Cascade and plunks them down in a rural area. This is a really nice one from Mab - a lovely one-off that could also be developed into a series, if she was so inspired. Mab's stories are rich in Jim/Blair conflict, but in a satisfying and believable way. Believable, never contrived. Also, her visuals are so clear in the mind's eye - for ex: "moon like a silk scarf, and the stars were abundantly, coldly beautiful. "

Mab is still active in Sentinel fandom, managing the Sentinel newsletter etc. Efforts of this nature, the ones that keep a fandom alive and well, are often under-appreciated, unsung. So, I'd like to crow a little about Mab's work and contributions. Like - thank you!
