This was the trouble of doing this with Brian. Staying here, sharing meals and a family, his home -- everything. Dom had always gone where the road led, and moments like this pulled at him, dragged him off the wanderer’s course he set himself, into settled, mapped-out places he’d always steered clear of. Getting too settled was the way you got yourself burned, in Dom’s experience.

Dom is elbows deep in a Jetta with a fucked alternator when he hears the familiar growl of Brian's car at the front of the garage. It's the deep-throated roar of American muscle, which still surprises him a little whenever he hears it. Brian's always been drawn to sleek lines and flash, but when he saw the hulk of the Challenger rotting in a junkyard outside Mexicali he'd grinned and said something about Miami and good times.

"Buster,” comes a low rasp in his ear, followed by a jangle of keys and Brian tries not to jump in surprise and give away his reaction to the deep, shiver-tones of that voice. Obviously Dom has grown bored with Letty’s game. “C'mon rookie, it’s time for a driving lesson.”
As usual, Brian hasn’t the slightest clue what Dom has in mind, but he follows like the faithful puppy Vince accuses him of being.
