“And you are treating me like a princess!” Tendou laughs, a cackling, obnoxious noise that makes Ushijima blush much harder. “Would you have thrown such a fit if it was Semi that had been insulted?”
“No.”
This makes him raise his eyes, interest piqued even more. “Oh? What, I’m just special because I’m the poor bullied baby? Or is it just because I’m your best friend?”
“It’s because I’m in love with you.”
Tendou feels his voice lodge in his throat, eyes widening all the way, skin immediately going from its usual pallor to a damn near fluorescent shade of red.
“Ex…excuse me?” he manages to croak eventually, though it seems Ushijima has picked now to develop the sensibilities of a normal human being, scratching at the back of his neck as he keeps his eyes averted.
“Of course I would defend Semi should he need me, under any circumstances,” he continues. “But I would give up volleyball for you.”

Finally, Lance stood up again, his pots and pans clacking. “Thanks for this, Keith,” he said as he placed a hand on Keith's shoulder.
Keith wanted to beg Lance to stay with him, to tell him how much he cared about their sharpshooter, tell him how much he longed to wake up every day next to him.
But, instead, he said, “Anytime, man.”
He let Lance walk away with the pieces of his heart.

He likes having a home to come back to, with a warm kitchen, a warm bed, and a warm body. He likes the open space and how much Kosmo and Kaltenecker get along. He likes how much Kosmo adores Lance and his homemade space wolf food, just for him. He likes that Lance buys stuff for him to have when he’s away so he has new things to come back to. New slippers. A new comfy robe. New matching pajamas. A new toothbrush. Keithlikes Lance. And everything that they are in the moments they’re together. And although he knows Lance is still grieving over Allura and that it could take a couple more years until he’s ready for a real relationship, Keith would take this over anything. Any day."

And, let’s face it, Lance is not a good enough reason to stay.

Lance would love to quell those burning feelings for Keith, to keep them buried for no one to see or to find out. No one needs the baggage, the burden of carrying Lance’s love with them. Keith has enough problems on his own, he doesn’t need Lance’s feelings added to the mix.
