Satoru gets released from the prison realm long after due, to an unusual world with no cursed energy and spirits.
The world has moved on after his sealing and he suffocates against the unfamiliar sights, new buildings, and structures. New technology and new people.
Everything’s changed. New and better, but—
Everything and everyone he worked for is gone.
Taken away to the cruel hands of time and something lurking sinister.
It’s Empty.
Even emptier when midnight strands greet him with a kind familiar smile, welcoming him into a strange world where he’s lost.
A kind stranger with the face of his lover smiling at him.
“Shoko, do you think he remembers?”
He’s desperate to find out what the hell happened.

hakoda watches the young firebender get up from his sleeping mat. he hasn’t been able to sleep, the air temple feels so quiet after his time in prisons and on his ship. zuko -- he hasn’t had much of a chance to interact with the former prince who disappeared the night before after he put himself between hakoda and sokka. hakoda has some ideas why the boy reacted like that, but hopes that he’s wrong.

zuko knows what it feels like to be the non-prodigal child -- knows how fathers treat the less gifted child. on the airship, he keeps to sokka’s side like a shadow, never mind that he’s shaking like a leaf from exhaustion and hakoda is twice his size. zuko came too close to losing sokka during the gondola fight, he’s not going to -- wait, when did he start to care that much?

And so the rest of Zuko’s bad luck from there was less to do with such emotional tragedies, and more to do with personal pride. For example, the situation with soulmates.
Now, when Zuko first got his words, he assumed that his soulmate was probably some sort of bee fanatic. That was what anyone else would have assumed before the fateful day of the 14th of December, 2007.
But then came the references. Oh the many references, and jokes. Zuko swore to himself that the next time someone asked him if he liked jazz, he would punch them in the face.
OR:
Everyone gets their soulmarks when they’re thirteen. When Zuko wakes up on his thirteenth birthday to a soulmark that almost completely covers his arm, he isn’t sure what to expect.
(Zuko’s take on “It’s the lack of creativity for me”. Can be read as a stand-alone, but reading the two together completes the experience!)

The point is, the concept was simple on the surface, but the people in Sokka’s life all had special and unique stories surrounding soulmates.
So of course Sokka would be the one stuck with only the word “Hi” tattooed on his arm.
In which Sokka overcompensates for his soulmate’s limited imagination in the greetings department (seriously? “Hi”?).

Summary
It's a week into Zuko's banishment when his soulmate severs their connection. And just like he doesn't deserve to be home until he's regained his honor, he figures he doesn't deserve a soul connection, either. It's all part of the same lesson.
(Soulmate AU: When your soulmate experiences a powerful emotion, you can feel it too. At any time for any reason, though, you can sever this connection to your soulmate so neither of you feel it anymore. Only the partner who severed the connection is able to unsever it.)
