Summary
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Shane Hollander attends a breakfast meeting inside the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Hundreds of miles away, Ilya watches the news, sees the tragedy and realizes that the man he loves, secretly, desperately, and without ever having said the words aloud, is somewhere inside.
With the phones down, the airports closed, and no one but Shane’s parents and Ilya's agent knowing what they are to each other, Ilya begins the impossible journey to New York.
Shane, meanwhile, is trying to get out alive.

Summary
“Hollander.” Shane’s head snaps back to his left. Ilya is much closer, pace slightly hurried. “Come here.” His voice sort of mimics the way one would talk to an animal paralyzed in fight-or-flight. Shane is not sure what to make of that.
He slowly turns his head in the opposite direction, where his vision tunnels on the door for the stairwell. It almost glows like a special item in a video game, like a hint. Without giving himself time to doubt, he bolts.
“Wha- Hollander, what the fuck!” Ilya shouts in audible disbelief, and Shane distinctly hears matching thuds of frantic footsteps behind him; Ilya is chasing after him. Shane runs faster, positively sprinting at this point. He’s the fastest skater in the NHL right now. He can do this. He flings the door open and bounds down the steps two at a time, hitting the walls with each turn of a corner. If he eats shit on this filthy floor and embarrasses himself in front of Ilya, he thinks, he’ll never let himself see the light of day ever again.

“Thanks,” Shane said, before he took a grounding breath. “I can walk the rest of the way, so…thank you, seriously. For the ride.”
Shane braved a couple steps, just to test the limits. He felt like an animal that wasn’t sure if it should run when presented with an opened cage, the freedom suspicious with how easily it was obtained.
“Where are you going without thanking me the way you know I want?” Ilya asked. His voice was unreadable, now.
He abruptly jerked to a stop.
Shane would never be stupid enough to hitchhike, to accept a ride on the back of a hot stranger’s motorcycle. Perverted enough, though? Maybe.
It wasn’t like this was their real life, anyway.

Don’t make me look like a lovesick idiot. Don’t make my heart trip over itself for a way out of my chest and into yours. Don’t say it like that—so fucking sincere—like you don’t know how devastating it is for me.
“Don’t butcher my language,” he says instead and kisses Shane’s smile hard, like reflex, like gravity, like there was never going to be another option.

Shane approaches the door where Ilya is playing with Anya on the bed. He doesn’t say anything, he just stands in the doorway, phone hanging limply in his hand and the colour has drained from his face completely.
“What is wrong, Shane?”
Shane looks down at his phone. His eyebrows have fallen in confusion, but it’s the look in his eyes that makes Ilya’s stomach drop.
“Um, I think you need to read these”
