Summary
“Hello,” Ilya repeats, still kind of stuck on those freckles.
“Hi?” the man says.
“Hi,” Ilya says—again.
Oh god, he's said hello three times now. He should literally say anything else. His name, probably. His phone number, preferably.
“Hi,” Ilya says again, because he can’t help it. “I am—”
“Are you Nick?” the man asks, and it comes out as a breathless sound.
OR: Shane gets stood up on a blind date, and Ilya comes to the rescue, and proceeds to make a series of questionable decisions.

Summary
Unspoken things grow in the cave of Shane’s chest, lapping over with new mineral layers the way a cluster of particles swells into crystal over eons. He knows that’s where the power comes from, from the relentless tug of the secret between hope and fear, evolving, expanding, fueled by the stewing uncertainty.
He’s only making it worse for himself. At this rate, if he ever confesses to Rozanov, there’s no end to what it might destroy.
Or: Old secrets are dangerous things—strange, unpredictable magic that Shane has never been skilled at controlling. He's spent years swallowing the words that could eviscerate his life as he knows it.

Summary
No one knows why some people have magic, but it's never so big that it makes a real difference—just small, practical things, making life a little smoother.
Still. Shane would rather have his magic be something like Rozanov's, instead of about his fucking socks.

Summary
He gnaws at the guilt of his own actions the way Anya does her chew toys for days after, Shane clearly picking up on something going on with him but also giving him space to work it over in his head until he’s ready to share.
Right up until they’re out at team dinner and the two other smokers at the table excuse themselves for a smoke outside and Shane looks to him expectantly-
-only to frown when Ilya stays where he is.
(how and why ilya finally gives up smoking)
