    The instinct to run was as strong as it’d ever been. Don’t think about her, he told himself, keep running. He clung to his mantra, trying desperately to stay in the moment. Keep running, keep running, keep running…

    Yet the lines he’d drawn in the sand became shallower as the tides tried to wash them away, and he was too clever not to notice Rose returning his feelings. Looks lingered longer. Excuses for physical contact became more frequent. His thoughts wandered, and increasingly he indulged them, imagining himself holding her the way he longed to.
