“Ivan.” Alfred had said, the name quiet, barely a whisper of air past his lips. Ivan had stood, abruptly, and rounded the table with a hand outstretched— to offer what, he didn't know. They had never been the type to give comfort to the other, their relationship never close enough for all that Ivan had wished it to be.

Summary
Clawed fingers drag across the wall, leaving jagged marks in a long, lazy trail. It's strange how easy it is, for jagged claws to cut through wood and concrete and metal. There are a lot of things strange about the Upside Down, it's inhabitants most of all.
Will supposes he counts as one now. It's certainly been long enough, and he's changed enough that he fits right in.

"Johnny."
The word is familiar, but he can't quite grasp its meaning. It is said with intent, a voice outside of his own, not that he's spoken in awhile. Who would he speak to?
"Johnny." The voice calls again, and this time he catches the worry in the tone, the relief, the fear. Why is it afraid? It's such a pretty voice, with the slightest metallic ring. It's nice to listen to, he thinks, even with the fear. He can't remember the last time he heard another voice.
"Open your eyes." The voice says. He isn't sure when he closed them, but he never is these days. The darkness and the light look a lot alike. He obeys the voice, if only because he wishes to know to whom it belongs.

It isn’t even a very difficult solution. Technically speaking, the crown isn’t made for this-- it isn’t a repository for all the people Jon wants to keep, it’s a structure designed for Beholding to perceive through-- but Jon is Beholding now, and he is the Crown, and he gets to decide. That’s the human part, the one he wanted to keep, the deciding.
