    Summary

After the All-Star game in Tampa, Ilya flies home to deal with his father’s death; Alexei is arrested, and Ilya assumes custody of his niece. After months away from the NHL, Ilya returns to Boston with a child, and Shane hears rumors of Ilya with Svetlana and a 3-year-old with curly hair.

Or: Ilya doesn’t communicate, Shane makes assumptions, and they’re both idiots. Featuring brattiness, pining, and second chances.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov is twenty years old when Svetlana calls to tell him she's pregnant. He is twenty-two when she dies, leaving him with two sons under the age of two, a promise he doesn't know how to keep, and Shane Hollander's number saved in his phone under a different name.

or, a story about grief, fatherhood, and the long way back to yourself (and the man who has been waiting there the whole time).

    Summary

The thing is, David’s pretty sure the kid’s living in a car. Or a motel, or something. Things aren’t good; he’s sure of that. He’s not the most observant guy, and he’s kind of shocked Yuna and Shane seem completely oblivious. Ilya’s twelve years old and wears a sweatshirt that hugs his shoulders far too tight, jeans that ride up past his ankles. He grimaces every time he has to force his feet into his shoes, clearly also too small. He absolutely, patently refuses to be driven home, and Irina never picks him up. He says he doesn’t know his mother’s phone number when Yuna asks for it; David suspects she doesn’t have one. And Ilya completely shuts down when someone mentions joining a hockey team.

Ilya and Irina find themselves in Ottawa in 2003. Or more accurately, the Hollanders find them, and never seem to let go.

    Summary

And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there, he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.

It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.

Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.

So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.

Or: Ilya Rozanov, meet your PTSD.

    Summary

Ilya’s smoking in the parking lot in Tampa when he realizes. Last time he and Shane spoke on the phone he didn’t say ‘I love you’ back. Shane had said it, and he had made a stupid fucking joke.

If he had died today, if the plane had crashed, he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to tell Shane he loves him one last time.

It sits wrong in his chest. It’s not guilt, at least not completely. It’s something sharper, like something is out of place, or unfinished.
