At least, enough to flirt back when he leaned against the movie theater counter with that easy grin, sneaking you free strawberry ice cream, throwing popcorn at you when the managers weren’t looking. You liked the way he made you laugh, the way his hair flopped in his face when he got too caught up in a story. How he seemed dedicated enough to show up to work every day in that stupid sailor suit. He wasn’t the same guy who used to ignore you in the hallways at school, the same guy who sneered at your friends when they weren’t cool enough to be in his orbit.
Or so you thought. Because now, sitting here alone, your pretty dress damp with sweat and your stomach twisted in knots, it’s clear you were wrong.
Steve stands you up for your date on July 3rd, 1985. What could his excuse possibly be?

Soo okok, so Steve and reader had a fight. idk what the fight should be about but probably not a huge like breakup fight but still one that makes reader avoid Steve. so reader is avoiding Steve as much as they can at school...like runs away if they see him. So Steve is like "i gotta make it up to them!" and comes to readers window with a speaker(here it gets cheesy) and plays baby come back by player. the lyrics fit the situation. anyway, reader is like rolling their eyes while lowkey laughing because Steve is being soooo cheesy. until they crack and let him come inside, where they talk and apologise and they are fine again :)
