Summary
The first of the girls to call out had been Prezzo, absent the day after all of them had gone out for drinks. Bella had been fairly certain that her cold was a ruse, covering up a leftover hangover and desire to sleep in, and they stayed firm in that assertion until Charlie called out. He, certainly, was not hiding a hangover, and Jean had seen how horrible he looked anyway when she stopped by with a sympathy bowl of soup and a box of tissues. Once it spread to Charlie, the rest of the war office started dropping like flies. Italia had been out the day before, rendering the rest of the typing pool rushed and frantic with their numbers cut in two, and then Hester had sent Monty, pale-faced and a bit shaky, home mid-afternoon after he missed two meetings face down asleep at his desk.
So it wasn’t shocking when Jean woke up, head pounding and her throat feeling all itchy.
