    Summary

He failed. The war was supposed to end on the Day of the Black Sun… but he failed. He failed his friends, his team, everyone, and the whole world.

Sleep never comes, his thoughts keep him awake as the weight of his failure bears down on him, suffocating even within the Western Air Temple’s refuge. And when he finds himself on the shores below the temple one night, desperate for air and silence, something pulls him from his melancholy.

    A rowboat? Out here?

Were they discovered? Tracked? Who would end up aground in a place like this?

    -----

She tried to kill him once, and for a moment, she did.

Unlike her pathetic brother, she was always smarter, more cunning, the prodigal child their father wanted. And yet, even after her nation’s victory on the Day of the Black Sun, the Crown Princess is broken, clinging to life by sheer will and the skin of her teeth.

The last thing she remembers is reaching shore… somewhere… escaping that bastard Earth Kingdom general’s stronghold with everything she had left.

Far from her fleet, far from her subordinates, she knows her chances of survival are slim.

Still, a small part of her prays, hopes even, that maybe, just maybe…

"It's Sozin's fleet," she whispered, the venom draining from her voice, replaced by a hollow, creeping horror. "Those ships... they were decommissioned before I was even born."
"We didn't just move," Aang said, the crushing weight of reality settling onto his shoulders. "The Catacombs... the energy. We tore a hole in the timeline. We're in the past, Azula. Before the war. Before I was frozen."

Azula, even in her mid-seventies, commanded the atmosphere of the island the moment her foot touched the stone. Her dark hair, matching Zuko's, was now woven with striking ribbons of silver and pulled back into a flawless, regal half-updo. She leaned slightly on a beautifully carved wooden walking staff. She wore immaculate crimson Fire Nation robes accented with deep saffron sashes that billowed in the wind. Resting proudly against her collarbone was a simple, carved wooden pendant—Monk Gyatso’s necklace.

“The Councilors offered one certain solution.” Zuko says, locking his hard gaze with Aang’s. “If the Avatar becomes tied to the dynasty of the new Firelord, the other nations will back off. The other problems will be resolved with the figure of the Avatar. Just like in Roku’s time.”

    How?” Aang asks.

    Azula doesn’t. She understands.

“They advised you to marry Azula.” Zuko gasps out.

    Summary

A sharp, ugly twist of satisfaction curled in Azula’s chest at the thought of the water peasant, quickly followed by a dark, simmering irritation.

Katara had abandoned him. The supposed "love of his life," the girl who had fought a war by his side, had simply decided that the life of the Avatar's partner was too demanding. She had packed her bags and fled back to her frozen wasteland in the South Pole, citing her need to rebuild her own home, her inability to handle the pressure of being the mother to a new Air Nation. She was weak. Sentimental. She had wanted the glory of the hero, but not the crushing, lifelong weight of the crown.

And yet, the Avatar mourned her as if she were a fallen deity.
