Dust never wanted happy endings, he never needed them either. But after he lost his sense of purpose, is there hope? Maybe the infinite loops of resets and killing everyone dragged him into that conclusion. Maybe he could live in a sense of peace and tranquility. But the multiverse has other plans. The poor guy's torture of resets never ended, even after being dragged out of his AU. Essentially nobody remembers this. Nightmare thinks he's delusional and his 'friends' already know how crazy he is, so there's no point in asking really. He swears something bigger is going on here, and it's dragging him INSANE.
Maybe the guardians of creation and destruction have to do with this...

If Killer was being honest, joining forces with Nightmare wasn’t such a bad idea.
Sure, Nightmare never exactly treats him the kindest. In fact, he constantly abused him, both physically and emotionally, and Killer could never quite keep himself composed in his presence. But living in a grand, gothic castle, wasn’t the worst trade-off. It wasn’t an ideal life, but it was something.
What he hadn’t expected, though, was that being here would lead him to someone who would change his life forever.
