Summary
William, an unfortunate Vietnamese orphan who was shipped to America with about 2,000 other unwanted children during Operation Babylift in late 1975 seemingly had no hope for his future. Or at least that's what 10-year-old Eliza thought, as she watched the new onslaught of children being upchucked and abandoned at St. Margarine's orphanage.
What would it even accomplish? These children would never get adopted, anyhow. None of the immigrant children got adopted unless it was by some mysterious rich person that only wanted to look good cause they had so much money they were running out of things to want. wShe would know, having been abandoned by an aunt who didn't want her and a sister who'd forget about her within a couple of months anyways. She knew she'd never find a home, and that was okay. But these kids, these babies, they didn't deserve it.
She might as well stick by the runt of the litter, a fussy premature 5 month old whose right eye wouldn't focus and whose left was fuzzy. Yeah, this one was doomed. With the last 8 years she's legally allowed to stay here, she might as well do some good. This kid was gonna need it.
