Merle's little brother was born blind and deaf. Their parents never sent the younger Dixon to school and they did nothing to try and teach him. After they were both gone, Merle took care of Daryl the best he could. During a health scare, he realizes that he needs Daryl to learn to be independent in case Merle doesn't make it. In a search for help, Merle meets Rick Grimes, an English Lit teacher at the local Deaf College who just happens to be starting a sabbatical.

The top dealers escaped the bust, and one of them wants Daryl back.
Rick is willing to put his life on the line as an officer and a friend, will it grow into something more than just an officer doing his duty?

He vanished to go on a hunt, left Rick to lie through his teeth about not being worried about Daryl’s long absence -- and when he returned, it was time to clear the air. And here he thought we was quite a social man. “Ya,” the man shrugged as a response to him. “I’m Rick.” He decided to say to him. There was no better way to get to know the other person right? He wanted to make friends as early as possible. Otherwise you’ll find that you’ll be a loner. And he wasn’t really a loner if he was honest.
“Daryl.” The man said shortly to him. It was already clear that the man wasn’t really a man of words, but he seemed like good company at the very least. Maybe he was just a bit shy, that was always an option too. “Want to sit next to each other in the course?” he decided to ask before anyone else had the chance. Well, there weren’t a lot of people here, but he just wanted to sit next to him.
