Summary
Elspeth Cousland survived the horrors of her family's purge and the Blight with barely a shred of her sanity intact, and is working to put herself back together again. She's determined to be useful and not get shoved to the sidelines. But when her old friend Nathaniel Howe returns to Ferelden, he's less than thrilled by his family's fate, and their friendship shatters under the weight of such trauma.
But from the ashes of the old friendship, they slowly find they can forge something new, and make a better world in the process.
Slightly altered DA universe. Hero of Ferelden is Kallian Tabris, mistress to king Alistair, and good friend of Elspeth (origins for this found in prologue). First person for Elspeth section, third person for Nathaniel. This fic will intersect with many of the events of DAA, but will not strictly repeat them - minor consequence of there being a surviving, non-Warden Cousland has some major impacts on the world. It will go into extra-game territory and original plot, particularly in tying some DAA and DA2 threads together in a largely canon compliant way.

Summary
In a slightly altered universe, Elspeth Cousland decides she wants to be trained by the best rogue she knows of: Rendon Howe. And while the man considers women ill suited to combat, the pressure of his liege lord, Bryce Cousland, sees him acquiescing, leading to Elspeth spending several years mentoring under the man who would eventually betray her entire family. She develops deep friendships with Delilah and Nathaniel, the former teaching her more about the lives of commoners she'd taken for granted, and the latter sparking her incessant curiosity in more ways than one. As a result, she meets and befriends the future Hero of Ferelden, Kallian Tabris - a change that alters all of their lives, and changes all of Ferelden.
This is my long fic, exploring a slow burn romance between a Cousland and Nathaniel Howe, dealing with the traumas of their family history. Trust that was once shared was shattered, and slowly grows back once more.

In 9:45 Dragon, a napkin containing a rare unpublished epic of legendary author Varric Tethras was found in the discarded remains of the at Skyhold. The chantry sister who found it deemed it both "pornographic" and "poorly written" and hid it under her mattress.
In 9:46 Dragon, a member of an organization called "Red Jenny" delivered this to our doors. And rest assured, we at the Bloomin' Smoot house have no religious compunctions against publishing it. After all, we are the finest smut peddlers in all of Orzammar.
