“I know, Kim Dokja.” Yoo Joonghyuk raises an eyebrow, his arms clenching the sheets underneath Kim Dokja, wrinkling them. “Are you implying that you know my body better than I do myself?”
“No, I…” Kim Dokja stops, the words clearly dissolving in his throat. Yoo Joonghyuk’s eyes latch onto the slow bob of his throat, the collar still barely clinging onto his skin.
“Then,” Yoo Joonghyuk says, “release your hands.”
As the command washes through him, Kim Dokja’s hands go completely slack as they crumple towards his sides. Kim Dokja emits a shaky exhale, his pupils quaking. Yoo Joonghyuk savors the sight of Kim Dokja’s eyes squeezing shut as he places a long-awaited kiss right onto his cheek, trailing down, slow pecks, before reaching his mouth.
When nearing his rut, Yoo Joonghyuk gathers the courage to take what he has desired all this time: his own advisor.

Summary
Kim Dokja reasonably took Yoo Joonghyuk’s clinginess towards him during his rut as the regressor’s biological instincts to seek comfort during an alpha’s rut (being clingy) and chronic trust issues (being clingy to him of all people). He genuinely could not comprehend what it was about his bland beta self that Joonghyuk prefers over, say, Lee Seolhwa’s refreshing apple mint scent—especially when he considers that they were once mates.
His first attempt to make sense of the mystery fell short as the glare the alpha shot him in response to the question was so scathing he thus learned to never bring it up again.

Summary
They’ve done this before—this rhythm, this sort of thing. It wasn’t new. Not since they’d gotten drunk months ago, falling into bed involuntarily, dragged on by Yoo Joonghyuk’s natural instinct. Back then, when they’d woken up, Kim Dokja swallowed down the feelings that had threatened to escape his lips. They prodded at his teeth, trying to pry through the cracks, but he would never relent.
As an alpha, Yoo Joonghyuk was destined for an omega. This sort of arrangement—an abomination, the definition of a freak of nature—would always be a fling, and nothing more. Even if Kim Dokja’s heart clenched at that very fact, it wouldn’t render reality false. He couldn’t choose to live in fiction if it could easily be broken by a snap of a finger. He would take this arrangement, for however long it lasted.
Kim Dokja knows that a relationship between a beta and an alpha can never last.
