They say that once upon a time, the gods reached down and rended one half of the soul from the other, man from woman, each meant to be half of a perfect whole.
(They say that Nimona was born wrong, because she could change shape, because she was neither man nor woman, because when she was a child, Nimona thought that she had heard the song on the air, but all she truly heard was the sound of the town burning, the world ending, as everyone turned on someone that they didn't understand, because it was easier to be afraid than to be curious with an open heart.)
Nimona goes a thousand years before she hears the snatch of song in her ears.

"What about a new car?" Sung Hyunjae suggested idly, sitting back in his chair in his ridiculously large dining room. He took a slow sip of coffee, watching Song Taewon carefully over the rim of his cup.
Song Taewon didn't look up from his newspaper. "I don't need a new car," he said without missing a beat. What he really meant, Han Yoojin knew, was that his car already was practically brand new—a sedate, serviceable model he'd purchased to replace the last one Sung Hyunjae had crushed.
The exact same model as the last one Sung Hyunjae had crushed, in fact. Yoojin definitely wasn't convinced that Taewon hadn't bought it just to prove a point.
Or, Han Yoojin and Sung Hyunjae plan Song Taewon's birthday.

Pity about the grandmother. In the original story, she'd already been replaced by something else entirely by the time the girl arrived.
