They say when you assume you make an ass of you and me.
Matt wishes that the Avenger's assumptions about his seeming inability to read the written word did something as benign as making an ass of him and them. Being called illiterate shouldn't hurt, not when he knows he's not, and it's not like he can tell them the truth.
Not that the truth would make much difference. He's just going to have to grin and bear it.

“Did Simon forget that I am much larger? And stronger?” Adrian asks in a hair raising tone, the claw of their limb bumping Simon’s chest testily like a human tapping a foot.
Simon’s eyes are huge.
Blown out wide with the man’s shock.
Second by second, their face flushes until its so dark it teeters on being purple. He could tease about how strongly Simon reacted to this display of strength but…
He’s no better.
He can’t remember the last time his face has been this hot.

That weightless feeling was stronger than ever, and he prayed the angel would not let go of him for fear he'd simply float away.
The angel's face however moved closer to Simon's, and he was still speaking. He strained to listen to his words as white framed his vision, only managing to catch the words 'grace,' 'hail Mary,' and 'safe.'
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is With Thee. Simon remembered. Mother of God, Pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Simon was safe, finally.

The turning of a new eye upon him feels as if he’s been scrubbed raw suddenly, the truth of him pulled from the dark places he’d made to hide it away as something answers him.

OR
Simon is rescued at the last minute by *something* and dropped onboard the Hail Mary at quite possibly the worst time. Ryland Grace is fresh off a horrible fishing trip and his best friend is comatose. As the most injured and broken versions of themselves, they meet.
