    Summary

Aleksander had waited centuries to meet the sun summoner. When he was young, the idea of a sun summoner had captured him instantly. They would be someone like him, who would understand what it was to be different, even from other Grisha. He would no longer have to be alone with only his mother for company; he would no longer have to hide. As he got older, his expectations for a sun summoner changed. He thought of them as an ally and equal, to stand by him in his fight to protect Grisha. Someone who, like him, would not age, would remain with him long after everything around them was dust and memory. He knew they would be young when he found them, but he would guide them and train them and together they would accomplish miracles. And now the day had finally arrived. The sun summoner stood before him:

Or that story where Mal is mistaken for the sun summoner, rolls with it to protect Alina, Alina hides in bushes and around corners summoning for Mal to keep the charade going, the Dorkling catches feelings, and Ravka is not prepared for these disaster twins

    Summary

“You might make me your wife, but I cannot love you,” Alina tells him, tone as burning as the Fjerdan frost, the words torn straight from the smoking ashes the loss of her childhood love left behind in her heart. And yet, despite all of her biting contempt, the statement still makes something twinge in her chest. Distant remains from a naïve, young mapmaker entranced with the attractive older man pulling her in like a spider into his web of lies. “I won’t. Ever.”

“Oh, Alina,” he says, a soft chuckle vibrating from his chest, his wretched, beautiful face looking at her with such belittlement that it makes her blood boil even hotter. “Little pet. Who said anything about love?”

    Summary

Alina was never an orphan. Discovered by examiners in Dva Stolba aged nine, she is taken from her troubled family and grows up in the Little Palace as the Darkling's protege. Alina is forever caught between the expectations of powerful men; the pressure of being a Sun Summoner, Sankta and the Black General's little pet tears her in every direction. Perhaps no surprise, then, that she grows up troubled and rebellious. With a hatred for being controlled, a fierce temper, a knack for seeing through lies, and the power of a god in the palm of her hand, Alina is hardly the pawn, saint or consort everyone seems to want her to be. She does not care; her life is her own, and she won't let anyone change that.

(or in other words, I get sick of Alina not making a single meaningful decision for herself. Imagine a Sun Summoner at full strength, politically savvy, yet determined to be a rebel without a cause)

The girl who many knew as Sankta Alina was sprawled out on her bed, dead drunk.

    "Alina," His voice was sharp.

Her eyes blinked blearily, his presence seeming to sober her slightly, but not enough. "Go away,"

No one else dared speak to him with such little respect. The Darkling's eyes narrowed.

    Summary

    Summoners aren’t born. They’re made.

Alina Starkova, Inferni of the 3rd Etherealki Order of the Second Army of Ravka, did not remember the tiny, unnamed border town she was born in. She barely remembered the Keramzin orphanage she had spent two years before being taken to the Little Palace. There, she had been made Grisha. She had uncovered the flame that burned inside her, had learned to control it, turning the tumult of emotion that constantly raged in her chest into living fire.

Her teachers had all marveled at her strength, her skill, her determination. All except Baghra of course. She marveled at nothing, but Alina did receive fewer disapproving sniffs than most of her peers. Alina did receive the most whacks of the old woman’s cane as she pushed one of her most promising pupils harder and harder, ever-demanding perfection.

None of Alina’s potential or realized power mattered. Three days after being stationed along the Ravka-Shu Han border, she was captured.

Hidden deep below the ground, cut open again and again and again, Alina Starkova was slowly unmade.
