Summary
A few years before the events of the novel, William Elliot is travelling along the Dorset coast when his curricle meets with an accident. A young naval midshipman comes to his rescue, and their chance acquaintance quickly blossoms into something more intimate as they go fossil-hunting in the tumbled foreshore west of Lyme. But they do not realise - how can they? - that the young expert they consult regarding their finds will become the most famous figure in British palaeontology.

Summary
Two days after their first contact—and more importantly, their first words—Grace sets up his thinking machine to speak.
Rocky does not need the assistance of a machine for Grace’s language. It is ugly and harsh to listen to, but it’s relatively simple to learn. That, and, well—Rocky was alone for a very, very long time before he met Grace. He maybe hangs on to each word a little more than strictly necessary. Grace only needs to tell him each word once for Rocky to know it forever.
Grace, though…
Well, he’s lucky Rocky is patient. Let’s leave it at that.

Summary
Grace learns from his students that the Eridians have been gossiping about him and Rocky. What spurred these rumors? An upcoming opera about them that's being marketed as a love story. Before they can make a public statement denouncing it, the director makes them an offer: a private showing before the public release.

Summary
The Eridians don't have love words. Love is assumed -- structural, built into everything. But they do have a word for the specific feeling of being relieved someone exists. Not for what they give you. For what they are.
Rocky has been trying to translate it for three years.

"Blip-A detected."
Grace raises his hands above his head in a gesture that might have been exasperation or might have been surrender – he thinks he can justify either, given the current state of chaos aboard the Hail Mary. "Sure!" he cries. "Why not?!"

Summary
“Would it help––should I bring my dinner in too?” Grace jokes, smiling in preparation for the absolute symphony of disgusted whistles he knows Rocky will produce at the thought of them doing something as depraved as sharing a meal. “I’ve been saving this week’s half packet of ramen for just such an occasion––”
A torrent of sound not unlike four harmonizing freight train whistles bursts from Rocky, the shifting plates of carapace at the top of what Grace thinks of as his “head-and-torso” rattling rapidly. Twin puffs of superheated air escape his vents, and there’s a ringing in Grace’s ears as he watches a glass beaker vibrate itself off the edge of the lab table near them and onto the floor with a loud clang. He squeezes his eyes shut, bracing for a shatter that never arrives, then stares in disbelief at the scene before him.
[YES YES YES!] Rocky’s translator app suddenly blares from the laptop on the floor between them. [YES ACCEPT ACCEPT ACCEPT! GRACE RAMEN ♪♫♪♫ WITH ROCKY, ACCEPT! GRACE ROCKY EAT ♪♫♪♫ MEAL TOGETHER AFFIRMATIVE YES YES AFFIRMATIVE NOW.]
