Obi-Wan looked up from the datapad he was pretending to read. The question hung in the air for a moment.
"They won’t."
Anakin stood up and turned his face away immediately.
“How do you know?”
“Because Master Qui-Gon staked his own reputation on you.” The answer came simply, firmly. Obi-Wan turned his eyes back to the datapad right away, still able to feel the boy’s gaze upon him. “The Council may disagree with him on many things. They often do.” A small sigh escaped through his nose. “But no one completely ignores my master’s opinion.”
And, honestly, that was what made the young Padawan most apprehensive. Qui-Gon had made clear his desire to keep Anakin in the Order—perhaps even to train him himself—and if that were the case, then what would become of Obi-Wan? He knew the rules; he knew the precedents. A Master could have only one Padawan at a time, and exceptions were as rare as they were nonexistent.”
