‘Two monsters at my door,’ the voice said with a reluctant hint of amusement. ‘I’ll pass.’
‘I am no monster,’ Damen said, laughing in surprise, and then: ‘You are not a vengeful ghost, are you?’
‘I—’ the face reappeared at the window, leaning down a little so as to take a better look, and allowing Damen to see that it was a boy, or perhaps a young man speaking. ‘I am not a ghost.’
‘No promises on the vengefulness, I see,’ Damen said, and was surprised to see the boy smile.
‘I’ll help you,’ he said, ‘and you will return at this same hour tomorrow, and grant me a favour.’

That shocked Damen out of his stupor. He flicked his gaze to Nikandros, who was busy trying not to laugh. “Yes, sure. I can do that. Only for a moment, though,” Damen finally managed.
A flicker of a barbed smile appeared on Laurent’s face. “Impressive,” he quipped. And then, “I heard you in class, talking about your road trip. I’d like to come along. Only as far as California, mind you. I have no way to get there alone, but I have family I need to see.”
Literally just a road trip au. Damen lets a stranger (Laurent) hitch a ride down to California with him.
