The fire had dimmed to embers, casting a gentle glow over the scattered parchments they had worked through together, and the tea he brewed for her now sat untouched and growing cold.
It should have been nothing more than duty, he told himself, yet the quiet ache settling in his chest betrayed him. She had leaned on him tonight, trusted him in her exhaustion, in her fear, in the heartbreak her ex-boyfriend had left behind, and something in him shifted in a way he could not undo.
He had no right to want more, yet the warmth of her presence clung to him like a confession he was not brave enough to speak.
With one last look at her peaceful face, Severus closed the door softly behind him, carrying the fragile truth with him into the empty corridor: he was falling, slowly and helplessly, for the one person he never meant to hold this close.
