Summary
"And then California put so much distance between us all, and it's like. It's like I never grew up. Does that make sense? Like you've all moved on and have your own lives now, and I'm still the kid that needs to be protected."
Mike nods.
"Yeah... shit, I didn't even realise, I'm sorry."
"No, it's fine—God—Don't apologise, you're the only one treating me like a normal human being!" Will punches his shoulder playfully. He pauses, retracting his arm and bringing it to fidget with his other hand, looking down at them like he wants to say something else.
"I just wish... I could be more at ease around them. The more they treat me like a kid, the more I feel like I need to act like one."
He looks back up at Mike, biting his lip as if debating adding to that statement. Mike gives an encouraging smile."I wish I could be more like you."
Or
Mike and Will bring out the best and most honest parts of each other by pretending to be in love, for a game of course.

Summary
Mike has finally made it as an author. But writing about your own past can get complicated, especially when fans start to draw conclusions that point Mike in the direction of the person he's been writing about all along.
And living life is hard. Especially when you're doing it all on your own. But grief and love are a lot more similar than you might realise. They both tend to wake us up from the monotony of our lives.
OR: Mike has a horrible time, which somewhere along the way turns into a wonderful time.

Summary
“He’s dead,” he whispered, voice breaking. Then louder, rawer, the words ripped out of him: “He’s dead!”
The floor seemed to vanish beneath him, his body giving out as sobs tore free. Arms caught him, strong and steady.
Together, they sank down.
“He’s gone, Will,” Mike choked out.
Will’s arms tightened around him. His voice was soft, certain, and the only thing keeping Mike from unraveling completely.
“I know.”
Mike buried his face against Will’s shoulder, his sobs muffled but unrelenting. He could feel Will’s heartbeat - steady, grounding, real - in sharp contrast to the chaos inside him.
His throat burned from crying, but the words spilled out anyway, hoarse and broken.
“He’s really gone, Will. He’s not coming back.”
Will didn’t reply. He didn’t try to say it would be okay. Because it wouldn’t be.
Instead, he tentatively brushed a hand through Mike’s hair.or
