Summary
"Active shooter.
The words land heavy and cold in his chest as he thinks them, as the horrifying reality sinks into his very core. In all of his experiences and career, there's something about a true active shooter that terrifies him. In war, gunfire is an expectation. Five years ago it was targeted, specific. This? An active shooter in a hospital. With sick and dying people and waiting rooms full of loved ones just waiting for answers. It's almost too much to think of. Too much to bear, the idea of anyone here just to hurt with no regard, no reason that truly makes sense or a motive that he might be able to parse."
Or, Eddie gets shot, almost bleeds out in an elevator, and finally figures out what he really wants.

Summary
"You used to call me," Buck says. He takes a breath. His eyes are burning, and Eddie is just staring at him, in the locker room, in the firehouse, which is the only place they're ever alone anymore, except that they're not, not really. Anyone could walk in. "Two years ago you wouldn't even think twice."

Summary
"What is it?" Maddie asks again. She can hear the edge in her voice. It's not anxiety, but it's not not anxiety. She slides off the stool, coming up alongside Chim, and touches his back. He jerks, then looks down at her. The expression on his face is one of astonished hilarity. Her anxiety eases; the curiosity remains. "What?"
"Okay, tell me I'm not seeing things," he says, nodding toward the back of the restaurant.

Summary
Something changed for him in New Mexico. On his knees in the dirt, cradling Buck's head, Buck's dirty hair against his palm and his pulse thudding against Eddie's fingers, which he couldn't pull away even though Buck was awake, smiling dazedly under the blood and the bruises. Something changed then. Cracked open. He could patch it up, probably. He's good at that. He's done it before, plenty of times.
Under his hands, Buck breathes, warm and alive.

Summary
Buck nods in understanding, looking down at their intertwined hands. "You don't have to worry about me, you know."
You're doing better. Sorry that I'm not.
"I don't think I know how to stop," Eddie confesses.
Buck looks at him for what feels like a long time, his mouth in a line.
Then he swallows, squeezing Eddie's hand again. "Eddie, I think you need to talk to someone."
Or: Buck is doing better. Eddie is still struggling after New Mexico. (A 9x16 coda/9x17 spec fic)
