A year after their graduation, the party goes their separate ways.
(Will decided to go to Columbia University to study visual art, Lucas also going there for basketball and to study architecture.
Dustin got into CUNY, Max into Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue her fashion dreams, and Mike in NYU.)
Yet living in the same state, they rarely see each other. This gives everyone to make new friends and find new things about themselves. Mike takes this very seriously and after a month of sharing a dorm, attending college and classes, his new friend gives him an interesting dare in truth or dare.

Mike doesn't just dislike his job, he hates it. A new pizza place (Surfer Boy Pizza) opened up in Starcourt mall, just across from Scoops. And it's taking all their customers along with their minimal paychecks, paychecks Mike really needs. Mike heads over to Surfer Boy Pizza to confront the asshole who's stealing his customers, but he runs into Will Byers.
