Summary
When Garrus Vakarian was refused a spot on the Normandy, he was forced to witness Saren's defeat from afar like the rest of the galaxy. Being denied further involvement had planted a seed of dislike for the first human Spectre, and he barely gave her further thought when her death was announced not long after the Battle of the Citadel.
Despite having made a name for himself among C-Sec for his exemplary performance during the geth attack, Garrus still quickly grew fed up with the constant praise of Commander Shepard, the restrictions he continues to face within his job, and trying to walk on the unstable path his father demanded of him.
He abandons his career and forges his own path on Omega, cutting ties with as much of his past as possible to protect his identity and deal back the suffering and destruction upon the merc organizations of the Terminus Systems that he couldn't before. For two years, he builds a team from similar minded people, and sends the gangs of Omega scrambling.
Eventually, three of the largest merc groups band together and, with the aid of one of his own turning against him, finds himself in the ruins of his base, surrounded by his dead team.
Then, SHE shows up.

Then she was banished to Earth for six long months and lost all contact with both friends and her boyfriend.
Now, the Reapers had the galaxy under siege, and Shepard is tossed into the fight of her life on behalf of trillions of lives. Even so, the separation before the invasion had a greater impact on her than she ever could have anticipated. She felt closed off from so many that she had fought with, even loved, and it was eating away at her fortitude.

Commander Shepard had a great team at her back, a unique home in the Normandy, and a burning determination to get what she needed- to hunt down the proof she required to rally the galaxy against the threat she knows is coming. And with a turian bondmate waiting to rejoin her on the Citadel, and the affections of an adventurous quarian by her side, she has all the reasons she requires to make sure she succeeds.
Then her life is snatched away violently.
Her family is thrown into disarray and are forced to go their separate ways, burdened with the knowledge of what is coming. Garrus Vakarian suddenly finds himself facing the galaxy without the woman he had linked his spirit with, and without her guiding light, finds himself unable to face the life he had known. He goes to the only place he could think of to work out his grief, maybe make a difference with each painful breath he continues to draw, and hopefully find a honorable ending to his suffering.
Ironic that his salvation lies in the most lawless place in the galaxy, but rules have no place in a heart torn asunder.
