Well, he thought numbly as the pain registered slowly in his mind, fuck.

    Lan Sizhui landed on the edge of the burial mounds with a loud crack that scared the ferocious corpses at the edge of the mountain. His feet caught on an exposed root, and he landed on his injured shoulder with a scream; except his voice got swallowed by hundreds of different voices roaring at the same time as they marched up the mountains of Yiling, and up to the lair of the cultivation’s world greatest enemy.

    “Kill the Yiling Patriarch! Death to Wei Wuxian! Dead to the Wen Dogs!”

    Or, the one where Sizhui travels back in time to the first siege of the Burial Mounds.

    The best things that ever happened to Lan Qiren were brought to him in the middle of the night by women with perms. First, his nephews, stricken with grief at the death of their parents, then Wei Ying, brought by a harried babysitter when his parents disappeared.

    There’s no time or space for grief or anything. He takes the children to buy black suits, he leaves them behind in the apartment, twelve-year-old A-Huan assuring him he’s old enough to be left alone with his brother, to go to their house and oversee it being packed up, the furniture sold, the personal effects of his brother and his wife put in storage.

     

    There’s no room for decisions or education. Only him sitting at his table with two children, eating in silence, only hearing A-Huan whispering to his brother in the middle of the night, only the three of them all tangled up together with grief and confusion and pain.

     

    And the certainty that he isn’t… that he won’t be a good parent.

    Wei Wuxian snorted, he put his arms up on the table and cupped his cheeks in both hands. His long white hair tumbled over his shoulders, shadowing his face.

    “I didn’t decide on anything Zewu-Jun, the Stygian Tiger Amulet simply didn’t want me to die” he laughed humorlessly “And isn’t that just confounding? That such a supposedly ‘evil artifact’ would accept that its master would destroy it, yet, wouldn’t allow his death”

    “Why did it bring you back as a child then?” asked the First Jade of Lan with furrowed brows.

    “Who knows” answered Wei Wuxian blandly.
