    It was missing a piece. And it was not happy.

    He grew up listening to a priest say that hell was not a bad place because of the suffering. It was a bad place because of the absence of God. Steve had never really understood that until now. Suffering he knew. He was born into it, grew up inside it, went to war carrying it in his frail chest alongside everything else. Suffering was familiar. Suffering he knew how to inhabit.

    But this, waking up in a world without him, breathing in a world without him, this was not suffering.

    This was hell.
