“I don’t know,” Steve answers. “Maybe we’d have run away. Just you and me, away from all of it. Don’t know. I wasn’t quite me then, I wasn’t thinking of after—just finding you. Tore through that factory for you, and when I—I almost stayed and burned in there. Figured it would be right. You were gone. What was I without you?”
“That’s not how—people don’t work like that, Steve.”
And Steve looks at him then, turning to his side so they’re mirrored curves on the bed, fingers linked in the scant space between them.
“It’s how I work,” Steve says quietly. “You’ve always been part of me. We’ve always been the same soul.”
It twists people, the bite. Bucky knows this, has always known this, and he’s known, deep inside, that every horrible thing Steve’s done to Bucky is the bite taking a love so sweet and warping it. But he’s never really thought of how great that love must have been, how grand and consuming, for it to survive the change and shudder into this twisting, pulsing thing that fills Steve’s eyes with such a wild light.
