Ren woke with a start. His whole body aching, like one big bruise, and his head was pounding, like Morgana was purring on top of his skull.
He remembered the arrest, and bits of the interrogation room.
The bed under him was too soft to be the floor of that interrogation room, the place they'd left him when he'd passed out. It was also too big to be his own bed, he could tell by the way tone of his arms was stretched out and not off the side. And also that Morgana wasn't sitting on his back.He took a deep breath through his mouth and the scent, cigarettes & spice, clinging to the sheets brought the end of it all back to him in a rush, his heart pounding.
He hadn't succeeded in convincing Sae-san.

Summary
Bored beyond comprehension, Ryuk decides after seeing what humans do with the Death Note, to experiment with what would happen if a human lived their whole life with access and knowledge of the Death Note. This leads him to find four-month-old Light Yagami, whom he decides to use as his test subject and has a little fun.
Light's parents, as with anybody else, can't see Ryuk and thus think Light is possessed, so while trying to find answers, Soichiro turns to a young cadet for assistance taking care of his son.
Light grows up knowing he is different but rarely bored with Ryuk by his side throughout his whole life and having little interest in using the Death Note, training in Shinigami magic and learning the ways of the world instead. But things become interesting when, after multiple incidents regarding his secret, someone else with the Death Note begins using it as the mass killer known as Kira.
Add in a dumbfounded detective and a task force all aware of Light's situation and far past caring, and Ryuk knows he made the right choice because he's found plenty of entertainment, even though he has to fight the protective instinct he's developed towards Light.

“You killed him!” Naomi, terrible Spanish accent learnt from the soap operas that Sally is now rather regretting allowing her to watch, accuses. “The man I married, the love of my life, is dead because of you!”
For a moment, the train cabin is silent. Sally, absolutely mortified, prays to all the saints whose names she can remember that the vigilantes just decide to leave, but they instead sit there silently, staring at her granddaughter from behind their motionless masks.
Then, Nightwing swings around in his seat to pin Red Hood with an outraged look.
