    "What did you just say?" Malcolm repeats.

    Connor moves his mouth around in a grimace, like the words are trapped behind his teeth and the only thing keeping them in are his sealed lips. "Go on a date with me," he says haltingly, each word using another breath.

    This isn't Connor's usual modus operandi. Normally, there would be some sort of physical evidence of the prank, along with the mental scar. A court jester, not an evil clown. But this sick joke doesn't sound like something Connor would cook up on his own.

    "A bet," he gasps. The pieces click into place when Connor's eyes widen guiltily. "This is a bet, isn't it?"

    "H-how did you..." he stammers out, taking a step back.

    "Like I said, Stoll," Malcolm feels his lips stretch up, forming a manic edge along his grin, "I know everything."

    Jason knew who Leo was. NRU had a fantastic engineering course, which is where Leo made his home. That alone would have raised a few eyebrows about his presence in the music room, as he never played an instrument, but beyond that, Leo was deaf. Jason was pretty sure he was going to go into cardiac arrest if something wasn't done about it.

    So, one evening, after rehearsal, Jason put his cello away, and hesitantly made his way over to where Leo was doodling in the margins of his textbook and staring off into the distance. Jason cleared his throat to get Leo's attention, cursed himself for being a complete moron, and rapped his knuckles on the table by Leo's book. Leo looked up at him, and Jason was immediately lost in big brown eyes and a dazzling smile. “I, um– Well, you, um–”

    “Hi there,” Leo said. He sounded odd, his pitch a bit flat, and the syllables falling out of his mouth like it was muscle memory rather than actual words. “Sorry, can you speak clearly? I can't read your lips if you mumble.”

    Jason has spent his whole life loving music. Life makes sense for the most part until he meets profoundly deaf Leo Valdez, who claims to love music as much as he does.

    “Do either of you know how to get a week’s worth of detention, fast?” Jason blurted. It was an embarrassing question to have to ask, but he was desperate and willing to get his help from anywhere at this point.

    Keith and David exchanged a puzzled look, before turning back to Jason. “Uh, yeah, probably,” David said slowly. “Why?”

    “Leo got detention,” Jason admitted. “I’ve been trying to get detention all afternoon, but I can’t figure it out.”

    “So that’s why you were just standing through Mr. Thomason’s lecture,” Keith laughed brightly.

    Jason groaned and hid his face in his arms again. “Guys, please. I’m running out of time. If I don’t get detention now, I won’t get it today.”

    “And why do you want detention again?”

    “Because Leo has detention,” Jason repeated like it should have been very obvious, which, to be clear, it was.

    “Your boyfriend got detention, so you’re getting detention, too, so you can hang out with him?” David asked, chin resting in his palm and eyes shining in mirth. “Gotta say, you’ve got weird taste in dates, Grace.”

    He froze when Leo folded his hand over his own, and he looked up to see Leo giving him an encouraging smile. “Just play it, man. Keep going, even if you mess it up. It doesn't have to be perfect. You just have to have fun.”

    Jason hesitated but with one last double thumbs up from Leo, he started playing again. He fumbled a few notes here and there, but he just kept at it until Leo's boisterous giggles interrupted him, and he narrowed his eyes playfully. “Hey man, you can't tell me to play for you and then make fun of me when I mess up.”

    “It's not that!” Leo insisted, but his words were bubbling with laughter. “It's just– Are you really playing ‘I'm Yours’ by Jason Mraz?”

    Jason isn't used to not being good at things. He still didn't remember everything from his life before, but he knew he was held to a certain standard, and he strived to achieve it. Unfortunately, his stupid guitar wasn't getting the memo. It may be time for him to get a new perspective.

    Leo set his creation down on the counter with pride, and pushed it over towards its owner. “One freakishly caffeinated vanilla latté for Blondie.”

    “Blondie?” the guy asked, taking his drink.

    Leo couldn’t help but notice how his eyes sparkled when he smiled, and it made his heart thump a bit faster in his chest. “I mean, what else was I supposed to do? You never told me your name.”

    “And you never asked,” he countered playfully.

    Leo works the late night shift at a 24 hour café, despite his own personal distaste for every type of coffee under the sun. Usually, he spends his nights working on his homework alone in the empty shop until he finds himself with a regular whose awkward charm and earnest smile steals his breath away. Now, if only Leo could learn his name
