“Kornhoer,” he’s properly begging now, and he does not care. They are sitting close enough that his thigh is pressed up against Kornhoer’s, close enough that he can feel the belled flare of his ribs. Inhale exhale inhale exhale, breathing in nothing but smoke and light. “Kornhoer.”
Sweat is beading on his upper lip, dewy on the fine fuzz of hair. It’s the flame, Kornhoer thinks. It’s the night. Hot and humid, its slobbering maw waiting to swallow them whole, gulp after gulp until tomorrow has nothing but bones left to pick at.
“Taddeo,” he answers softly.
The night before Taddeo leaves the abbey, he pays Kornhoer a visit.
