Summary
Clair Bobier is a twenty-five-year-old man living in a studio in Utah. He barely earns enough money as an aid in a private counseling firm, but he manages to survive simply enough by living an unimpressive life. Other people overwhelm him despite his long-standing interest in them, so he's settled on meeting his social needs at work and otherwise living independently. He's long given up on the hypotheses he developed in college, or the idea that he was particularly special for the peculiarly intense and vivid way he experienced people. He's submitted to working a comfortable job to get by like anyone else for the rest of his foreseeable life, and has resigned not to think much about it.
When a pair of Australian arsonists burst into his place of employment, demanding treasures that he has no means of providing, Clair feels as though he should be upset. And while he may be distressed, even overwhelmed, he finds it surprisingly difficult to be upset. After all, Clair always had a powerful intuition, and it was whispering that these two were what he needed. With them in his life, Clair could become somebody he actually wanted to be
