Summary
A three-part study of Kiera and Carlos on opposite sides of one moral line, set across the back third of Season 2 (2x10–2x12). Spoilers through 2x12.
The premise is the fault line the show opens in this stretch and never quite closes: Kiera is a cop from a future police state, and the present-day VPD is sliding toward becoming one, and Carlos is the man who can't stop seeing it happen. Each part hangs on a real canon beat, the night after Garza calls him "part of a police state," the time-travel device turning up in Lucas's van, the thumb drive in a dead man's pocket, and follows what it costs the partnership. Across the three, Carlos goes from holding the line, to turning his back, to reaching into a corpse's jacket. Kiera goes the other way.
Each part comes in two cuts: a gen version and a romantic-subtext version. They share a spine; the romantic cut just lets the undercurrent run nearer the surface, though it never quite breaks it, Greg and Sam are still sixty-five years away, and that's the point. Read whichever you like, or both.
It's all meant to sit inside canon. If I bent a detail, it was on purpose, and I'd love to hear about it in the comments.- Language:
