“Well I was more into grounding than goddamn child abuse.”
“Grounding like…” Her face scrunches in confusion as she dares to look at him. The word is foreign and the best guess she has doesn’t seem right, but she also doesn’t know what else it could be. “Like being…in the ground?”
Joel stares at her for a long, long moment before he speaks.
“Jesus fucking Christ.”

As the (alleged) daughter of the new president, Ellie Wiliams is hellbent on making herself as much of a nuisance as possible. Joel Miller, the virtually unreadable and perpetually grumpy bodyguard assigned to watch her for eighteen hours a day, certainly thinks she's doing a good job of it. But as Ellie processes losses of her past and present, she slowly begins to realise just how valuable it can be to have someone watching your back.

Just a regular day, but they were the days Ellie liked the most.
Then Tommy came over.
That, in itself, wasn’t the problem. The problem was the fact that he had interrupted their breakfast by pounding on the door like someone was dying. Ellie flashed a look to Joel, but he was already standing, looking slightly worried as he walked toward the front door just beyond the kitchen. Tommy beat him to it, opening their front door just as Joel reached it.
“Joel.”
The word was spoken with such soft desperation that Ellie was on her feet in an instant. Something was wrong, something was happening, and whatever it was had Tommy shaken enough to say Joel’s name like that.
“Joel. There’s a woman at the gate.”
(Or Sarah lives! somehow! And Ellie is forced to realize her place besides Joel now that his REAL daughter is home)

But then Joel starts patrol. And he’s gone - outside the walls, without her there to watch his six, to stand on his bad side and hold his rifle for him when he needs to look for something in his bag. He’s got partners, sure, but they aren’t her. They don’t know him like she does: they don’t know the gait of his steps, the hitching whine of his left knee, the beat of his heart. Knowing Joel - the good and the bad and the funny and the painful and the sad- has been her job for a year. It was what she did. But now they’re in Jackson, and things are different. They have to be different.
So she goes to school, and Joel goes on patrol.
And Joel gets hurt.

Summary
Joel and Ellie arrive in Jackson ready to live, not just survive, but it isn’t all smooth sailing. When Tommy first arrived in Jackson and thought he’d never see his brother again he confessed all his, and Joel’s, sins for everyone to judge. That, combined with the state Ellie is in when Joel and Ellie arrive, means Jackson wants to take Ellie away from Joel and find her “proper” parents.
Joel and Ellie don’t want to separate, but neither of them are ready to get back on the road just yet. Ellie endures family after family trying to make her stay while Joel experiences a fear over 20 years old: being separated from his daughter and fighting for custody.
Both of them have to define what they mean to each other after, and if Jackson can be their home after all.
