Ryland Grace woke with a start, opening his eyes before quickly squeezing them shut against the bright light of the room. His head was tipped back, the top pressing back into a soft surface. Turning his face to the side, away from the direct view of the light, he gave a few cautious blinks until his eyes adjusted. After a moment, he carefully looked up, rolling his head into an upright position to look around the room.
It featured two rows of reclined leather chairs, the back row elevated slightly above the front. The right arm of each chair featured a few buttons on a small keypad. In each seat there was a member of the Project Hail Mary research and mission team. Most of the members were blinking awake like he was, although some were still unconscious.

The members of the Project Hail Mary find themselves in a cinema, forced to watch a film which supposedly shows their future. Their captor tells them this will allow them to save Earth (and Erid) but how?

    Simon waited.

Waited for them to apologize. Tell him there’s nothing they could do. That he wasn’t worth the trouble or resources, that he wasn’t worth the time.

    But that never came.

Instead, after a second Grace came back on the line, his voice sounding determined now. “Alright,” he said. “Hang tight.”

    Simon blinked slowly. “What?”

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.

    A child, I realize with a start.

    That’s a child!

“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.

“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.

    Used.

The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

Time is a fickle thing - not liner or ever-set, but branching and ever-changing. Tom Riddle thought he had more of it, until what should have been an every-day occurrence took a turn for the worst. In a blink, Tom Riddle stops existing in one reality . . . And reappears in another.
(Because much like Time, Magic is non-liner, and she does as she pleases.)
The next thing Tom Riddle knows, it’s the summer of 1994, and there is a house shaped like a Rook, a man that see’s things he can’t, and a girl that dances around his questions, gives no straight answers, and doesn’t seem to mind the Darkness of his shadow versus hers.

    Summary

The accusation the Truth had levelled at him had stung, but it had been — well, true. He’d trusted, blindly, in men who’d only been trustworthy according to some bullshit metric cryptically communicated to him by an old man with his own agenda. He’d trusted his contingencies and his double-blinds, his schemes and his whisper network. And what did all that get him? He’d completely lost the capacity to care for those who had entrusted themselves to him, much less the whole country he’d been proud enough to envision under his wing.
Can he really become worthy of their faith again? Does he have any capacity to care and to protect, now that the illusions have all been stripped away?
“I’ll be back in the morning, sir,” says the one person whose answer he already knows.

Or: in the ten days after Roy leaves the hospital, he learns how to cook an egg blind, loses his comfortable pants, prepares for his reinstatement evaluations, dreams of Maes Hughes dying, ponders the domestic applications of flame alchemy, second-guesses everything he ever believed about his role in his country's future, and moves in with his lieutenant.
