Ray knew perfectly well that wasn't true. He didn’t play favorites between Emma and Norman—he loved them both equally. But the comment made him wonder … what if they did have a favorite? And if so, who would it be?
It was painful to think about, but the more he dwelled on it, the more certain he was.
If either of them had a favorite, it wasn’t him.

He went for the shot and was just about to let go when something caught his eye and the arrow missed, startling the deer. She whirled to see what had caught his eye to see Tamala watching them.
What the fuck was she doing? She never came onto this side of the aqueduct at this time of day? She had seen her red eyes late at night near the grove as Hassian slept and she tried to walk off the feeling of being unable to sleep, but never in the sunlight. Never when Hassian could see. Never when Najuma was out.
Hassian was pale, as if he had seen a ghost. Staring at Tamala. Who had a smirk that raised anger in her. Tau growled.
“Hassian,” She said softly. “She doesn’t-”
And before she could even figure out what she had wanted to say, he was gone, turning on his heel and running south, Tau running after him.
“Hassian!” She called, but he was gone already.
(Or: Their courtship is secure, when they see Tamala while hunting. Hassian sees his reaction as a setback while his suitor wants to give his trauma induced scars a place to bleed safely. )
