Ilya hesitated, staring at the number. He was captain of Hollander’s new team. It would have been completely normal, if not expected, that he would reach out to him soon. But his hand had turned to lead, his finger hovering over the “Call” button. What would he even say?
“Hey Hollander. Sorry your team dumped you out of nowhere after building them a dynasty and you’re being shipped back to your hometown to play on an historically shitty team, captained by me, the guy who you’ve been pitted against your whole career and built up a decade’s worth of resentment towards, not to mention the fact that we sucked each other’s dicks that one time years ago and then pretended that it never happened. Haha, yeah, good times. Anyways. See you at practice.”

“Am I interrupting?” Ilya raises his eyebrows and two paper cups, one in each hand. “They had your tea complimentary with hot water dispenser. I did not have to wait in line.” He holds one of the cups out for Shane, who does not look away from Rose once.
Rose asks, “What’s going on?” Shane realizes he hasn’t spoken.
“Oh, sorry,” he says, “I thought I heard something. Do you wanna maybe get out of here?”
Ilya rears back, offended. “Shane,” he says, and his voice is so hurt, so shocked, it makes his stomach turn.
Rose glances between them. “Do you… do you know him?”
Shane blanches. “You can see him?”
