“I’m Eddie, by the way.”
“Oh, uh—” The boy takes the hand that Eddie holds out and shakes it, apparently raised too well to snub an offered handshake. He is slow to offer his name in return, however, a flash of uncertainty crossing his fine features. Finally, he says, “Tom.”
“Can I buy you a drink?” Eddie asks, prepared to innocently pretend he had no idea Tom was here with someone else.
Eddie is treated to a third variety of smile from Tom—not the shiny, attentive smile he had for his friend, and not the easy, dreamy smile he had in general—but one that is a little sly and a little bashful at the same time. There is beauty in contradiction, Eddie has always thought so.
“Club soda,” Tom tells the bartender, “with lime—on my date’s tab.” Tom hikes his thumb over his shoulder, gesturing toward that old fucker back at the booth.
Behind Eddie, Jeff cackles, long and loud and exactly like a giant prick. “Oh, man,” Jeff says, making a big show of holding his ribs. “You got shut down by a fucking octogenarian!”
Eddie is settling into his new boring life as a teacher. He meets a guy at a bar. The guy’s not boring.

Summary
Eddie is a counselor at Camp Mirkwood: a homey, quaint, little sleepaway camp where the middle class dumps their children so they can get a summer to themselves. Steve Harrington works at Camp Loch Nora across the lake, a camp for country club progeny to experience nature in a removed, sanitized way and occasionally, to interact with the riffraff of Mirkwood to—build character or something.
Eddie hates Steve Harrington and the feeling is mutual. They also have sex in the woods sometimes.

He’d successfully bred faes for his collection many times before, but every case of success had been of a more abundant species. Purple-winged tricksters were rare. Even someone like Winslow had only a couple in his collection, both males.
There was only one way to get more faes for his collection.
After drugging the fairy, he placed her on a metal tray and tied up her limbs. He poked at her cunt with a dissector.
“Alright,” said the collector, rolling up his sleeves. “Let’s work you open to make the insemination easier, little lady.”

Eddie’s brow furrows. His wings quiver.
“And how is that our problem? What exactly do they want you to do about that?”
Steve thinks he's playing dumb on purpose, but he doesn’t say that. He supposes the sooner he gets this out in the open, the better.
“Well, produce an heir, obviously.”
“Produce?” Eddie’s brow twitches.”Like what, in a shop?”
Steve rolls his eyes. “Yes, Eddie, in a shop. C'mon already, you know exactly what I'm talking about. They want me to take a consort, have children. A son or two, preferably. It's one of my duties as a-”
Eddie snarls. His eyes flash gold, just at the same time that the warm glow in Steve's chest turns into a searing blaze, jealousy and possessiveness and mineminemine crashing into his mind like a physical thing.
It occurs to him, a bit belatedly, that maybe he could've chosen a smarter way to open this discussion.

Anyone less experienced would probably miss the split second before his face shifts to a smile. Eddie catches it all, though. The wide-eyed surprise, the startled intake of breath. The way that smile is just a little too sharp around the edges.
“They allow anything if you pay accordingly,” he claims, sliding back into his chair. “And besides, he's well trained. Aren't you, sweetheart?”

“What the fuck?” Steve blurts. Again. He's starting to lose count of how often it's been. “Who do you even think you are, you fucking weirdo?”
The guy cocks his head in confusion, but only for a second. Then, that infuriating grin slips back on. He's handsome, in a dangerous and rugged way, with his wild hair and bruised lip.
“Apologies, he rumbles. “Where are my manners?”
And then, without getting up off the ground, he reaches out and takes Steve’s hand in his. Steve watches, heart in his throat and eyes wide with confusion, how the guy bends into a dramatic bow and reverently kisses his own blood off his raw knuckles.
“The name is Edward. King Edward of the Woodland Mountains. Also oh-so-aptly known as Edward the Banished, though my friends just call me Eddie. And you, my dear …”
He looks up, all glinting eyes under dark lashes and Steve needs to swallow against the lump clogging his throat.
“You're going to be the one who saves me.”

It starts as a joke.
The kids, they’re little shits, who make fun of him on the daily but he loves enough to take them to school and help with their homework. Drives them places when it's raining or cold or they can’t be bothered to bike and packs them lunches when he knows their parents have forgotten. Let’s them sleep in his house when those same parents are out of town, or when Joyce is at work and they can’t all sleep there, and the Wheelers are sick of all the kids spending days and days and days in the basement and like he said it started as a joke.
A comment here and there about him being a babysitter, how far he’s fallen from King Steve to become an unpaid childminder, a joke that isn’t quite a joke after the tenth time. Then when he really falls into the roll, somewhere between the first experience of the upside down and the third, when not knowing when they are, if they’re okay, made his chest tight and his breath shorten until he can get ahold of at least three of them.
Somewhere between there being just four of them to Eleven coming back and Max joining the group they start calling him mom.
