Summary
Country roads are nothing short of familiar to Dennis. And not too long ago, they were the only thing he knew.
Dennis rolls down a window, letting in the warm dry air of June. The smell of corn and wheat is quick to enter the car, and Dennis has to keep the window rolled a little over halfway up because the dirt will get in his eyes if he doesn’t.
Soon, he passes the wheat field, and is met with flat grass with large black cows grazing and sunbathing.
Seeing these cows, he thinks of the cows back in Broken Bow. His family’s cows often brought a smile to his face. They are such kind animals, and if he could, he’d live alongside them and only them for the rest of his life. Dennis likes to think that with his time on his family’s farm, that maybe he gave a piece of joy to the cows’ short lives in the kindness he tried to show them.
