Summary
Shane is crumpled motionless on the ground, curled in a ball, with Comeau kneeling on him, just hitting him. And hitting and hitting and throwing so many blows that Illya can’t count. He can’t see Shane’s face, but he very much can see that there’s blood on the ice. Blood on the toe Comeau’s skate. Blood flying from his knuckles. The puck is scattered away from them, as are their sticks.
The entire arena is silent. Waiting for Comeau to stop screaming and hitting. Waiting for Shane to move. Waiting for someone to move.

He hadn’t told Rozanov, why would he? They’d exchanged their usual quips in the days leading up to the game, riffing about who would win, how many goals they’d score. But underlying it all was the knowledge that they’d end the night in each other’s arms. Shane refused to admit it, but that might have been part of the reason he was so determined not to get sick. If it was any other game, any other team… It had been four months since he’d seen Rozanov. Four months of convincing himself he would finally end it, while simultaneously counting down the days until they would see each other again-- until this game. Rozanov’s smile was all teeth. “Ah, yes. Is gift.”
Something tripped in Shane’s chest at the idea. Sure, they’d been hooking up for nearly half a decade by this point, but four frantic trysts a year did not a relationship make. Certainly not a relationship which included gifts.
“Oh. I mean– thank you.” The sincerity felt strange on his tongue, but Yuna and David Hollander raised Shane with goddamn manners, and if somebody gave you a gift you said fucking thank you.
Even if that someone was Ilya Rozanov. Even if he was looking at you with a Cheshire Cat smile that made you think you’d seriously missed an important piece of context.
Or: Five times Ilya and Shane got each other gifts that absolutely, categorically, 100% didn't mean anything, and one time they gave up pretending.

“Oh yes, I’m sure doctors would say this is fine,” Rozanov waved his hands around more violently. “‘Yes, Hollander’ they would say, ‘take your broken ribs and go get fucked so hard you cannot move. Is no problem, no problem at all’.”
“Bruised, not broken,” Shane corrected, although he knew that wasn’t really the point. “And a little rough sex isn’t going to kill me. I’ll be back on the ice before the next Raiders game, it won’t affect the season if you’re like…worried about poor sportsmanship or whatever.”
“Fuck Hollander, I do not care about the season! I care about–” Rozanov cut himself off sharply.
Shane gets injured during a game, then tries to hide that fact from Ilya. It goes about as well as you might expect.
