Summary
Adelaide crumpled the edge of the paper.
She was twenty-six once; she remembered that year.
She had spent it shielding Aurèle from the Firstmen and scrubbing Lucifer's grief off the floorboards.
To see that age represented by this bubbly, mindless affection was an insult to every scar Adelaide wore.
"Husk," Adelaide said, her voice turning chillingly calm.
"Yeah?"
"Drive. I need to prepare a room." She smoothed the letter out on her lap, her eyes turning cold and clinical. "If she wants a mother, I shall give her one. I will teach her everything she has missed. I will teach her how to walk, how to speak, and how to bleed."
She looked at the letter one last time before folding it into a sharp, tight square.
"At least it will be easy," she murmured, a dark amusement dancing in her red-tinged eyes. "One does not need a scalpel to dissect a butterfly. A heavy hand will do just fine."

Summary
Being the mastermind behind Vox's downfall should have been enough to erase the humiliation of what Vox did to Alastor during his heat.
But when having a truly absurd amount of sex while in peak estrus might have resulted in the intended consequence--when it's possible Alastor is with child--he is stuck in a predicament.
How else can he punish Vox for such a transgression when he's already taken everything from him?

Rosie blinks in surprise. Mama? She wasn’t a mother to anyone. Although, if this demon had just dropped down to hell, and she resembled his mother, she supposed she could see the confusion between them. ‘Oh, honey, I’m not…here. Let’s get you inside before someone eats you up.’
‘I’m…Alastor,’ the demon finally introduced himself. Rosie hooks her arm with his, helping him half walk, half stumble to her emporium’s entrance. ‘You’ll get used to the hooves soon, darling.’ He stumbles with a little fawn bleat, instinctively clinging closer to her arm. She huffs softly with amusement, muttering, ‘Just a baby fawn, aren’t you?’
Alastor shoots a glare at her, but she sees through it. He was adorable. Rosie gets him into a spare room she had for visitors, helping him sit down on the bed as she fetches nightclothes for him. He stares at the rather feminine clothes before shrugging and getting into them, falling down again. ‘Ratchet hooves,’ he mutters to himself, growling in frustration as he gets up. Rosie came back in after a moment to make sure he was alright.
She took him in.
(in other words, Alastor and Rosie meet. They both find out he's ticklish. Chaos.)
